There is a direct train from Southampton Central to Weymouth, and it is the one to take. South Western Railway runs it, with ten stops on the way, and a typical journey lasts about an hour and a half. The quickest runs did it in 1h 24m.
The weekday timetable we checked had 30 departures from Southampton Central, from 06:17 until 22:52. The early part of the day is thin, with trains at 06:17, 07:02, 07:59 and 08:59, roughly one an hour. From the 09:25 onwards they come twice an hour, at about 25 and 52 minutes past, right through to the 20:51.
After that it drops back to hourly, and the last two departures were the 21:51 and the 22:52. Leaving Southampton late in the evening is therefore fine, provided you aim for one of those two rather than turning up on the half hour.
One other routing appeared, an 18:56 with a change at Parkstone that took almost two hours. With the direct 18:53 leaving three minutes earlier and taking less time, it has nothing to offer unless that train is cancelled.
Driving is a shade quicker on paper: 62 miles by the A31, around 1h 27m, against about 1h 33m for a typical train. The difference is small enough that the train’s lack of a change, and the fact you can step off it a short walk from the centre of Weymouth, will settle it for most people without a car to hand.
Weymouth station sits about 890 metres from St Mary Street. Allow twelve minutes or so to walk into the middle of town from the platform.
